Description

The Global Game Jam (GGJ) is the world’s largest game jam event which takes place at hundreds of locations globally all on the same weekend. During this yearly peak in game development, game designers, artists, coders, students, teachers, industry veterans, and enthusiasts all come together to create a working game or demo within 48 hours. Around the world, more than 20,000 enthusiastic game developers create playable games over the span of a weekend. In the Netherlands, the 2016 GGJ will take place at different locations across the country. The event is a perfect opportunity to meet new people, be creative with video games, and share experiences. It also is an environment where every stage of game creations takes place, from designing, programming and testing – with the 48 hour time limit as a strong incentive for efficiency. On Friday afternoon, participants gather at their chosen location, usually kicking off the weekend with an inspiring keynote speaker, followed by the presentation of the yearly theme and team formation. The jamming starts shortly afterwards, and doesn’t stop until Sunday evening, when all prototypes are due to be completed and presented. 518 sites took part in the global game jam in January of 2015, with 28,837 participants in 78 countries producing a total of 5,438 games.

History

History of Global Game Jam NL

The first Global Game Jam of the Netherlands took place at the University of Applied Arts (HKU) in Utrecht. Enschede, Leeuwarden, Breda and Amsterdam joined in 2012. There was a need for a centralized Dutch website, where they could have one place for registration and communication across the country. Together with the help of Dutch Game Garden, Global Game Jam NL was created. The locations share experiences, exchange jammers if a location is full, organize a national competition, and get sponsors for T-shirts, lanyards, etc. Not all Dutch GGJ locations are part of GGJNL though: there have always been locations that are independent. Every year more than 600 people register across the country, and this number is growing significantly every year. In 2016, Amsterdam is host to 2 locations. Eindhoven and Groningen also joined as new locations.
